The client asked us to replace two chilled water pumps, one of which had failed and the other one was very old and near the end of its life. We had to keep the one pump that was still running, in operation whilst we installed the first new pump. Then once the new one was installed, the remaining pump would also be replaced with a new one. The work also involved replacing some redundant pipework with new 200mm iron pipework.
We started by arranging for the electrics to the first pump to be isolated and locked/ tagged off and then we drained down, checking that the valves were not letting by.
We then removed the redundant sections of 200mm iron pipework and blanked off the valves at high level. Once all of the pipework was removed, we removed the pump using lifting equipment. We installed the new pump and in the meantime, the new pipework that was required was being arc welded at our Fareham fabrication facility.
Once the pipework had been fabricated, it was delivered direct to the client and installed by our team. The first pump was fully tested by running it for 2 weeks to ensure that everything was operating smoothly and once we were satisfied that there were no issues, we repeated the process for the 2nd pump. Following completion, the system was fully tested and commissioned. The project also involved installing new inverters for the pumps, new DP switches and cleaning and painting of the floor around the pump set.
